The Acting
The acting by John Voigt, who played the part of that evil snake poacher who had once been a seminary student for the priesthood, was very convincing. His accent and mannerisms were dead on as he conveyed the intense, ruthless savagery motivated by materialism and religious hypocrisy that his character demanded.
However, there are certain things that distracted me from enjoying the film. First, after the introduction, during which some monstrous force that was supposed to have been an Anaconda, attacks a man isolated in the middle of the rain-forest and wrecks his cabin from below, the scene suddenly shifts to Jennifer's naked butt as she walks towards her lover who is in charge of the expedition.
A distracting agenda
This inexplicable, and totally unexpected focus on Jennifer's BUTT. is followed by a purposeful focus on just how Hottentot and utterly out of proportion it looks whenever she is filmed in profile. All the shots, except for the first one, which nevertheless strongly insinuates that directors believed her beauty is only in her ass, seemed hell-bent on diminishing her.
Constant Contrasting
In contrast,They constantly exalted the preferred beauty of her Anglo female and put her forth as the lead actress while making Lopez look like a token fill in. Lopez was made to look sweaty and in serious need of a shower, while her co-star, and supposedly supporting actress, always looked clean and dry despite the stifling heat of the jungle. She was also constantly conveyed as extremely desirable by having her lover shower praise and attention on her. In contrast, Jennifer's man seemed very aloof to her presence, preferring to focus on the business at hand while only occasionally deigning to give Lopez a perfunctory glance..
Ridiculous Representation
Even worse, is the ridiculous representations of the snake as moving with agile, lightning-speed. That's like showing Tyrannosaurus Rex doing somersaults while chasing a triceratops.. Sorry, but all of us have seen those national Geographic documentaries and know that Anacondas are sluggish creatures and totally unable to move that fast.
Neither are Anacondas so agile as to swoop shown from a tree while hanging from their tails and snatching up someone in free-fall. Neither can they swallow a human whole and then swim swiftly away as it easily did after it swallowed Gary. So the way the snake was depicted was extremely distracting because we know that it is unadulterated BS.
Had it been described as some kind of a mutant escaped from some genetic experiment lab-then it would have been acceptable. Instead we are supposed to believe that all Anacondas behave that way and have those abilities.
