Why do Spaniards become Unintelligible in Films?
Strange as it might seem, Spaniards are in the habit of speaking in films in a way that is unintelligible to other Spanish speakers. Not that they can't be understood elsewhere. They are perfectly understood in shows, and during general conversations. But put them in front of cameras to make a film, and they seem to automatically shift into this unintelligible mode where words merge into each other in a ridiculously super- rapid-fire fashion with numerous misplaced accents.
As a kid I thought it was because I was mainly an English language speaker. I assumed that my parents were understanding what they were saying. After becoming an adult, and learning how to speak, write, read and understand Spanish perfectly in different Latin American dialects I watched those films and found myself as confused as I had been as a child.
Yet, I very easily conversed with Spaniards all the time in Miami, and they did not talk that way at all. Weird!
BTW
I strongly suspect that even Spaniard moviegoers don't know what the hell these rapid-velocity word-slurring Spaniard actors are saying in those films.

Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
