Would Mankind Behave Differently in Space Colonization?
On the surface, human colonization of space cuts a very noble and romantic figure of thriving colonies living peacefully and prospering. But is such an ideal vision truly what is most likely to occur considering the predatory inclinations of the human character?
Well, considering how we have and are behaving here on Earth, achieving that kind of ideal social harmony could indeed prove to be extremely problematic. After all, the human behavior driven by human emotions here on Earth have repeatedly caused havoc to break out over such things as natural resources or living space.
Would it be any different in outer space? Well, if it would, there is absolutely no indication. Instead, it is far more likely that human personality quirks would produce a repetition of everything that is going on on Earth into other areas of the universe. The dog-eat-dog, cutthroat competition based on envy and materialism would very likely immediately kick in. This basic flaw of the human personality is what provides Sci Fi novels and short stories with all the motives they need in describing all hell breaking loose between humans over the same familiar issues.
But in space, it would likely be much worse since the remoteness of location would make control far more difficult. Earth authorities might be too busy struggling with problems down here and might decide to tolerate levels of lawlessness that it never would otherwise.
Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
