Independence Day Film: Latinos Snubbed and Denigrated
This his film is about how humanity meets the challenge of a violent alien invasion with the extermination of mankind as its aim. A truly well made film with very impressive and convincing special effects and superb acting. However, as I watched it, I could not help but notice how whoever was in charge went out of their way to exclude Latinos. No it wasn't a total exclusion in the sense of absolutely none being present at the time. Instead it was their total exclusion from any participation in the success of the important events and a obvious attempt at malicious snubbing and Denigration.
Please note, that in stark contrast, they made absolutely sure to include numerous African American actors playing the parts of high-ranked military personnel as well as being present and significantly involved at the White House during the crucial moments after the aliens arrived. One of the helicopter pilots of what they referred to as Welcome Wagon, and some of the jet pilots were African American as was the protagonist Will Smith who was given a star role in the film and who was instrumental in bringing the aliens down. . The rest of those suignificantly shown involved in the struggle were Anglo Americans and two Jews. One which was the main protagonist along with Will Smith.
In contrast: How were Latinos Depicted?
1. All areas of the world such as Asia, Africa, Europe shown to be involved in the military struggle except Latin America.
2. A TV announcer is shown warning Latino hood-rats not to shoot at the alien e ship with the illegal gang weapons lest they provoke an interplanetary war.
3. One Latino adolescent was shown as ill and vomiting at the side of the road.
4. His Latina adolescent sister and Latino boyfriend are depicted as about to have sex because the world was coming to an end and she didn't want to die a virgin.
5. Their older brother is assigned to serve coffee to whites and black jet pilots who are preparing to go fight the aliens. "Keep the coffee coming"" they say to the Latino in a smug knowing way.
6. Instead of having the three adolescent kids father be a Latino, they decided to have an Anglo play the part of their foster dad. Wondering why? Well, simple, because he is to be the hero of the film by sacrificing his life for the world in a kamikaze attack against the alien ship. After he does so, the Latino older foster son is told that he should feel proud of him. He responds: "I am!"
7. All areas of the world are shown celebrating the victory EXCEPT Latin America which isn't shown at all.
