Mouse Phobia
The fear of mice, known as suriphobia, musophobia, or murophobia, is one of the most common phobias in the world. It can arise for a number of reasons, such as a frightening experience involving mice or a more general fear of germs and diseases. Their quick, twitchy movements combined with their beady black eyes, long worm-like tails, and sharp front teeth make the presence of mice disconcerting to many people. Although musophobia is often seen as an irrational fear, it pays to be cautious around mice because they spread diseases and cause structural damage to homes.
Unfortunately, I suffer from this ridiculous phobia. I have felt this way all my life but only realized it today after giving it serious thought and after watching how calmly someone else handled the situation.
You see, I caught a mouse yesterday evening in one of those sticky-type mousetraps which leaves it alive and struggling to get free. I had expected it to go down in silence, but the struggling went on and on for hours. Some of the squealing seemed like it was pleading with me to show mercy.
Gradually, my strong aversion to looking at it and getting near became mixed with urgent feelings of compassion. I began picturing myself calmly releasing it, but the terror that such a thought generated kept me at bay. The high-pitched squeaking itself made the aversion stronger. Finally the struggle seemed to cease. Yet I could still not get near. Although it caused me great embarrassment, I was finally forced to get someone to discard it for me.
Weird that such a small animal can induce this strong irrational fear in some people.
