Is Terra-forming Mars Really Feasible?
Is terraforming Mars as easy as most people think? Or are their insurmountable obstacles that makes the effort practically a water of time resources and effort. As it turns out when one examines the details meticulously, terraforming Mars isn't as easy to terraform as films such as Total Recall depict.
Here are some major obstacles:
1. Insufficient gravity to retain an atmosphere
2. Too thin an atmosphere to protect against incoming micrometeorites and meteors. Too thin to retain solar heat, thus causing temperature extremes between day and night.
3. No rotating core to generate a magnetic field that protects against cosmic rays and solar radiation. That means either dwelling underground, or in caves.
The video explains the different approaches that might be tried in order to cope with these and what is needed to succeed. To be honest, the general impression I get is that trying to terraform Mars isn't really worth the money the effort or the risks.
