Nurture vs Nature: Study of Twins
The term nurture vs nature, refers to two opposing ideas. Nurture, in this context, is the belief that human behavior is solely the consequence of upbringing or social nurturing by parents and society. In short, the person is born and raised in a culture and that culture determines how he or she will behave in general.
The term nature, in this context, is the belief that a persons behavior is predetermined by heredity. It holds that certain dispositions or tendencies are passed on by the ancestors and that these determine the general direction in which a personality will develop.
As it turns out, neither of the two ideas are right. You see, it has been found that both nurture and nature contribute to how a person's personality takes shape. This has been confirmed via identical twin studies where twins that have been raised in totally different environments are compared. Remember, identical twins have identical genetic heredity, and if nature idea is correct, then both should have similar personalities and behave generally alike despite nurture differences.
Well, examination of the twins has shown that although similarities do exist due to identical heredity, nurture does counterbalance or else reinforces nature as the following video points out.
