All Puerto Ricans Physically Resemble Each other?
First, Puerto Rican is a nationality and not a race. Members of the same races tend to generally resemble one another. Members of the same nationality need not.
For example, I am Puerto Rican and yet I don't resemble any of my Puerto Rican first cousins. Some of them have North European appearances, while I don't. Others resemble West Africans, while I don't. My aunt Julia and my mother resembled Native Americans, and I don't. My Puerto Rican father resembled a white Spaniard and I don't.
None of the Puerto Rican friends whom I grew up with resembled me. So the idea that all Puerto Ricans physically resemble one another baffles me. Not everyone in Puerto Rico physically resembles the late Afro Puerto Rican athlete Roberto Clemente, nor the Afro Puerto Rican boxer Tito Trinidad. The Boxer Kermit the Frog Cintron certainly doesn't, neither do the previous or current governors of Puerto Rico nor millions of other Puerto Ricans.
Not one Puerto Rican living in the housing complex I now live in resembles me, nor any other person in my nuclear nor extended family. My son doesn't resemble me at all. He resembles the Mexican boxer Oscar De La Joya and I definitely don't. My two former daughters don't resemble me nor their mother.
My former Puerto Rican so-called wife resembles an East Asian, and has been mistaken for one, while two of my Puerto Rican girlfriends looked northern European, as do several of my Puerto Rican female first cousins.
My Puerto Rican paternal grandmother looked native American, while my Puerto Rican maternal grandmother looked northern European and was often mistaken for one. My aunt's Puerto Rican husband looked West African.
Every single Puerto Rican woman in the building I live in looks distinctly different from the others. I have often mistaken a Puerto Rican for an Anglo American or an Afro American. I myself have been mistaken for Italian and for Asiatic Indian. One Puerto Rican lady I met was of Korean descent yet spoke Spanish better than me. I had absolutely no clue until she revealed it.
So where this strange idea that all Puerto Ricans physically resemble one another comes from, is totally beyond me. Could it be due to selective blindness?
