LENGTH
Knowing the official length of a short story guides the writer in deciding how much narrative and dialogue to use. Of course not all short stories are of identical length. In fact, they can range from few words to twenty thousand words. In comparison, novels are always more than 40,000 words and can be 100,000 words long on average, while novellas are typically less than 40,000 words.
Flash fiction
Then there is Flash Fiction. Flash fiction is a fictional work of extreme brevity that still offers character and plot development. Varieties, are defined by word-count. They include the six-word story; the 280-character story (also known as "twitterature"); the "dribble" (also known as the "minisaga,"composed of 50 words); the "drabble" (also known as "microfiction," 100 words); "Sudden Fiction" (750 words); flash fiction (1,000 words); and "micro-story".
Topics that a short story can cover
Just as the Novel and Novella, the short-story accommodates any theme such as, sci fi, western, romance, horror, historical, religious, or the recounting of some memorable experience in the writer's life. It can be humorous, using parody to promote a political agenda or criticize a present administration's policies while offering a viable alternative.
Just like the Novella and the novel, it creates drama via struggle by pitting humans against nature, such as hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or some terrifying encounter with some predatory animal hell bent on having humans as a meal. Or it can pit humans against themselves, as when a struggle against some serious congenital physical handicap, such as missing limbs, paralyses, or perhaps some emotional or mental handicap
