Why did I choose this Avatar?
I just received a racist comment on Twitter, insinuating that I chose the Wolverine actor avatar because I am desperately yearning white privilege. Now, the first thing that struck me as strange about this accusation, is that the person in the Avatar is not what is typically imagined as a European white Nordic person. In fact, the skin color on the avatar is far from being lily white and looks tan instead. Much tanner than I am, in fact.
Furthermore, such facial features are very common in Latin America and Southern Spain and Italy. So that being the case, and my being Latino, how the hell does such an accusation of seeking to be identified as being lily white European male apply?
The truth is that it doesn't. You see, the racist using that argument against me would be the same one who would vehemently argue that the dude in the avatar is definitely NOT genuinely white if his surname were Garcia, Gomez, Medina, or any other Latin American or Spanish name.
Now, why this person would be angered, is yet another question. After all, all I did was mention that I had been discriminated for being Latino in an Italian neighborhood. Is this person Italian? Well, in that case, this person should know, or be made aware, that Italians in the USA are not generally viewed as being white either by Anglo Americans nor by African Americans. Instead, they are generally considered mixed and in the same racial category as Latin Americans.
Also, no, I was not mentioning the incident involving female politician Pelosi and the Latin child standing beside her because I have anything against Italians. I mentioned it because it explains her rude behavior toward that little girl whose only sin was to be standing what she obviously deemed too close next to her. You know, to explain why Pelosi might have been inclined to push her aside as if the girl had been carrying some kind of contagious disease.
Or if this offended person was an African American, who became offended because I said that African Americans were playing baseball with Italians and Irish when we Latinos were being persecuted by Italians back in Newark New Jersey during the early 1960's, well, yes that is exactly what they were doing in the Christopher Columbus Homes Housing Projects, playing baseball and being friendly with the Irish and the Italians while we were being discriminated.
As for the idiotic assumption that all Latinos have absolutely no right to identify themselves as white, that racist attitude, so very typical to African Americans and Anglo Americans, is considered to be ridiculously ignorant by the rest of the civilized world. Why? Simple! Because the racist claim doesn't hold up under close examination which reveals that Latinos can be persons of any race.
So why did I choose that avatar? Simple: because it conveys youthful healthy physical Latino male appearance. Why didn't I choose a black African superhero instead as the Twitter racist suggested? Once again, simple, because I do not physically resemble an African American nor do I share the African American culture. Make sense?
