Reinforcing Stereotypes
First, let's consider what stereotyping is:
So stereotype is an opinion that a person reaches about people, places, or anything else after having experiences related to them. Now, as the video pointed out, stereotyping can either be positive or negative. And yes, it can be both useful as well as detrimental since it can lead to the victimization of the innocent based on the actions of the guilty.
Stop Reinforcing a Negative Stereotype!
Now, one thing that we definitely do not want to do is to contribute to a negative stereotype by providing evidence to support it. For example, if our group of people is deemed to be violently inclined, then we certainly don't want to be providing videos showing our stereotyped people doing exactly the things that they are being stereotyped for. You know, such as choosing to resolve differences via physical violence.
. Now, if we constantly provide such evidence, then we are cutting our own throats and forfeit our right to be complaining about the very negative conclusions that we are voluntarily and happily helping to create by constantly providing people with video evidence that they are right.
Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
