Careful with the: "How you doing?" greeting
How you doing?" Seems like a very friendly and innocently harmless question intended as a greeting, doesn't it? Well, that all depends on various circumstances that affect the way that the question will be perceived.
For example, when the question is asked of someone who is obviously doing well, then it is OK. However, when asked of persons who are obviously not doing well, then it will be perceived as sarcastic. So it is important to know who exactly we should not be using that question as a greeting with. Let's consider these persons:
First, by the extremely aged, I am referring as persons who have reached the expected average lifespan or who physically look as if they have reached it or exceeded it.
Why? well, because the extremely aged feel as if they are in the same situation that criminals on Death Row are. Yes, unlike death row prisoners they might be unaware of the exact moment when they will die. However, they are constantly expecting death because their allotted time is nearly gone.
So because of this disagreeable situation, the aged person will tend to perceive anyone smilingly asking: "How are you doing?" as a malicious mocker, instead of a friendly greeter, After all, it should be obvious that the person being greeted in that way is at the end of his lifetime is consequently not doing too well.
Now, the same principle applies to someone who might be hospitalized and or gravely ill, or those who are homeless and living on the street or at a homeless shelter. Obviously, they are definitely not doing well. So asking them that supposedly rhetorical question, will be perceived an attempt at being sarcastically cruel.
Yes, of course, younger people might not realize the seriousness of the issues, and might be genuinely trying to be friendly without realizing just how hatefully annoying the "How you doing" greeting question is being perceived. But if nobody informs them about the unintended distress that they are inflicting, then the annoying behavior will continue.
As for those who are using this "How you doing?" greeting in a sarcastic manner, they deserve absolutely no response at all. Responding to their sarcastic greeting will only serve to encourage their abusive behavior, and we certainly don't want to do that.
