Asking For Take backs
In chess, asking for a take-back happens when a chess player player has made a move and asks the opponent for the chance to change it. It can be because the player has suffered a mouse-slip, and the piece was placed on an unintended square.
For example, if the chess player had attempted to castle but only managed to move the king just one square along the rank instead. In such a case, the positional disadvantage can certainly lead to a loss, since many tempos will be wasted trying to transfer the king to a safer location.
Or the player might have been attempting to capture, and the capturing piece fell a square short. Now, take-back requests based on those mouse-slip reasons, are perfectly understandable, and some players might feel that it's only fair to grant such a take-back request. However, not all take-back requests have those justifiable motives.
For example, the take-back of a move request, might just be a cunning ploy to distract the opponent from noticing some clever tactical combination. So in an effort to render the opponent more vulnerable, the player tries to make his opponent think that he made a mistake which he wishes to rectify. Once the opponent is convinced that an inferior move has been made, he might not properly evaluate it, and might soon be either checkmated or else lose material.
Another reason might be based on some serious oversight. For example, after having moved in haste, a player might suddenly realize that he could have taken your queen or some other major piece. Even worse, that he not only didn't see that your queen could have been captured, but that he had also left his own queen in danger, as just happened in my recent game.
Yes, the opponent did indeed immediately request a take-back. But granting such a take-back would have meant allowing him to capitalize on my own carelessness by letting him capture my queen. So of course, I didn't grant it. In fact, it surprises me that anyone would expect such a request to be granted. However, a request for a draw might have had a far better chance.
