Puerto Ricans are Not all Racially/Culturally Identical
Language
In stark contrast, Island Puerto Ricans know how to write, read, and speak Spanish fluently. In fact, it is their primary language and only speak English if at all as their secondary language. Also, in contrast with Puerto Ricans in the USA, Island Puerto Ricans are not Afro Centric. Instead, they recognize the vast diversity that exists among them due to the great variety of people whose settled there, and who contributed significantly to their culture. They give credit to the Spaniards, and other Europeans, to the Tainos and to the Blacks, and do not just focus on just one culture and race, as New Yoricans tend to do.
Language
Many people erroneously assume that all Puerto Ricans share the same culture. That is absolutely not true. Just as Puerto Ricans differ in physical appearances one from the others, so they do so culturally. For example, second and third generation current New Yoricans raised in New York have English as their primary language and only know how to speak Spanish in a very rudimentary type of way. They don't know how to write nor read it. They have also culturally absorbed many of the African-American cultural traits in the manner that they speak English and in the political opinions that they tend to express.

Music
Yes, we also differ significantly in our muiscal tastes. For example, the Bomba music is all the rage with New Yoricans, who seem to assume that all Puerto Ricans share their musical preferences. Well, they are wrong. As an example, I am Puerto Rican raised the states who grew up hearing boleros sung by vocal trios with famous singers such as Felipe Rogrigues, Johnny Albino, with Spanish-style guitar in the background. Listened to Aguinaldo's, Tangos, Mexican rancheras, and mambos primarily played by Perez Prado and his band. Yet I never heard a single bomba. Also, my primary musical interest and taste, while growing up in Newark New Jersey, was rock and roll of the du-wop version as performed by such groups as Little Anthony and the Imperials, The Four Seasons, The Paragons, and the Jesters, and later, the Beatles.
So this bongo-conga-driven music, as well as its frenetic dancing it inspires, is totally alien to me. Neither do I like salsa. I find it boring for being too repetitive both in themes and in melody. Yet New Yoricans identify with this Bomba, an African music characterized by drum beating and erroneously proclaim it to be the main dance on an island, while those on the island do not. Instead, island Puerto Ricans, and those raised differently, view the Bomba as a dance popular in Loiza Aldea, a region of Puerto Rico where the majority of Black Puerto Ricans reside, which is exactly what it is.
Race
Although Afro Americans and Anglo Americans like to imagine all Puerto Ricans as being of the same race, they are not. Neither do they consider themselves as all being of the same race. For example, nn the United States, the vast majority of Puerto Ricans will not identify as white. Yet on the island, they do.
Actually, the reality is that there are indeed Puerto Ricans who are Koreans, Chinese, recent arrivals from Europe, or from the Mideast, or whose families are primarily descended from Europeans, while there are Puerto Ricans who are primarily descended from West African ancestors. So expecting all Puerto Ricans or all Latinos to identify as one race, is really unfair and essentially nonsensical and very often based on ignorance.
