Is Colorism Unique to Latinos?
First, colorism is not merely finding lighter skin tones more attractive. Colorism is discrimination based on the tone of a person's skin, regardless of the person's race or ethnicity. In other words, it is used to justify social injustice.
So no, being a victim of colorism myself, at the hands of society in general, and at the hands of family members, as well as being a Christian, I do not approve of devaluation of any human being based on skin-color. However, to blame one particular culture as the primary proponent of colorism is unfair, since this noxious phenomenon is found everywhere,
You see, judging by the African American reactions to colorism among Latinos, it might indeed seem as if colorism were found primarily among Latinos. However, a careful investigation reveals it as a social phenomenon present in every human society, including societies where the majority of the populations are dark-skinned, such as in India, Southeast Asia, Sub Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and last, but certainly not least, among the African Americans themselves who are constantly pointing accusatory fingers at Latinos as if this were found only among them.
Yes, it definitely is unfair to those of darker skin to be made to feel somehow deficient and be placed at asocial disadvantage and it is very unfortunate that human beings have this pernicious predisposition.
Also, yes, it would certainly be a better world if colorism did not exist. But unfortunately, it does, just as a host of other human flaws exist, and blaming one culture as the main culprit, as African Americans are doing with Latinos, is certainly unfair.
