How Rockets Work
Most people assume that in order for a vehicle to move forward while off the ground, it needs to harness the atmosphere like the birds do, like the propeller-driven planes do, and like jet-planes do. But this really isn't so. Rockets do not depend on the atmosphere at all. They depend on the principle of action reaction. This can be illustrated by how a rifle recoils when the bullet is propelled forward. In the same way, when the rocket fuel is ejected, the rocket moves or recoils in the opposite direction.
