Why do some Latinos find being called Brown offensive? There is a very popular custom in the United States among Afro and Anglo Americans of referring to all Latinos as brown. True, certain Latinos, who indeed are brown, calmly accept it. In fact, some even join in gladly in spreading that popular erroneous notion. However, there is a significant number of Latinos who find this purposeful Browning extremely offensive. Why? you might ask. Well, the answer is very simple-because a very significant number of Latinos are not brown. Some are predominantly white with white skin and European features while other are of unmixed European ancestry. So when people such Latinos as Canelo Alvarez, Cameron Diaz, or Emilio Estevez, or Actress Alexis Blede, and a host of others, who are not brown, are referred to in that way, they find it racist. There are also unmixed or predominantly black Afro Latinos who feel offended by that term Brown as well. They constantly wonder why they are being deprived of their Black heritage by being referred to as brown while African Americans in the USA, who range from 20 to 26 percent North European ancestry are referred to as black. After all, having North European ancestry is having an ancestry from the whitest part of Europe. Afro Latino, European ancestry, in contrast doesn't originate in the whitest part of Europe. So why this BROWNING attempt on their black heritage?
