Newbie Writer Mistakes: Novels
1. One Dimensional Characters
2. Backstory Baggage
3. Unnecessary Details
4. Novel's Length
5. Action and Character Reflection Balance
The first category that is listed, reminded me of this novel I was reading many years ago which was approx. 99 percent frenetic action. It was one continuous furious battle of humans against insects on this planet, with virtually no character development whatsoever.
Because I wanted to be entertained, I stubbornly strove to stay with the author and to get excited about what was going on, but found myself annoyed at the incessant action and finally not caring whether those being described as perishing died or not.
After all, why should I? They were all merely one-dimensional voices which ha been haphazardly very briefly introduced by names and who were now suddenly running around frenetically shooting at anything that moved. No personalities whatsoever. Just veritable cartoons. Finally, after struggling to stay with the story, I was forced to put the book down.
Unfortunately, that type of writing would very likely get an Awesome Five- Star rating at certain writing websites in order to keep the member feeling like a star and in that way reinforce the writer's bad habits and increase the likelihood of his or her manuscript-submissions being rejected.
1:10 - One Dimensional Characters
2:50 - Backstory Baggage
4:25 - Unnecessary Details
5:30 - Improper Book Length
7:05 - Imbalance between action and reaction

Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
