Definition of a Two-Star Bandit
Please forgive me for delving on this curious phrase, but I had never encountered it on any other writing forum in all my 27 years of being on the internet and being a member of various writing forums until only recently when I was tagged as a Two-Star bandit by the Story Star forum administrator and banned because I gave a Two-Star rating to her pet member for stories that he wrote. which I honestly considered to have been FAIR. Which is what the Two- Star vote represents, a rating of fair.
Now this is not the first time that she disrespectfully tags me as a Two-Star bandit. She had done it many months ago because I gave a fair rating to many others whose work I had also considered to be fair.
The results? They all began grumbling about having received a two-star rating of fair as if prodded in the rump by a hot poker, especially her pet member who grumbled that whomever it was, he hoped would be OK with his own conscience for having dared to give his story a Two Star fair rating.
Motivated by this sudden hub-bub of irate protests, she dished out money to hire an investigator to see who it was that was giving the fair ratings, [She could have simply asked and I would have gladly said it was me because I didn't see anything wrong with responding with an honest opinion that she had gladly made available on her website.] her henchman tracked me down, and she immediately banned me without any warning. When I asked why I was being banned, she immediately said because I was a two-star bandit.
Now, I don't object to the phrase Two Star, after all, there is nothing degrading or offensive about it. What I do object to is being tagged as a bandit. Why? Simple, because the term bandit suggests that I was doing something illegal, which I was not.
Now, had the category of Two Stars not been available, and had I somehow introduced that category into her forum, then the term bandit would have applied. But as anyone who visits her site can plainly see, a two-star rating of FAIR is made available with a one-star rating of poor being the lowest one can rate a story. That being so, how the hell can a member be tagged a Bandit because he is using the two star rating?
Well, the only explanation that makes any type of sense is that this individual's goal is to make everyone at her website feel like a star. That is to feel like a flawless accomplished writer regardless of the drivel that the member might offer as a story.
Since that is very obviously her goal, whenever anyone tags a story as fair, which is definitely nor indicative of being an AWSOME writer, then that frustrates her goal, and she feels that her goal is being threatened. So the reaction is drastic. Make sense? Of course it doesn't!
If indeed that is her goal, which obviously it is, then I would suggest removing other two star fair category and having just three ratings.
Awesome- Five stars.
Great - Four Stars.
Good - Three stars.
On the others hand, then she would very likely start griping is anyone dares to give too many three star ratings because it might make a member feel inferior. So the only real solution to this psychological conundrum, is to have only one rating of five stars or Awesome. That way, every member will be happy, none will feel the need to gripe about receiving a Fair, Good, or Great rating as opposed to the five-star AWSOME one.
But unfortunately, of course, since that decision would reveal too much of the supposedly hidden scheme, there is absolutely no chance of it being adopted as a viable policy, and the two star bandit accusation will very conveniently continue to be used as an excuse for banning anyone who dares go contrary to the goal of making everyone there feel AWSOME.
In short, if indeed you want you ego stroked, that's the place to go. However, if your goal is to to improve as a writer by receiving honest positive feedback to your stories, my friend, then you are definitely in the wrong place.
