Anglo Slavery and Spaniard Slavery Were Different
There is a very serious misconception that Anglo and Spaniard slavery were identical. That is absolutely not true. Below are enumerated some very significant differences between the two systems.
1. Under the Anglo system, a slave was considered merely property and was treated as such. In contrast, under the Spaniard slave system, a slave was considered a human being who had merely suffered a misfortune that could befall anyone.
2. Under the Spaniard system, slaves could work and earn money with which to eventual purchase their own freedom. Under the Anglo slave system, the enslaved condition was unescapable.
3. Under the Spaniard system, family members such as sons and daughters from parents and husbands from wives, were not separated from one another.
4. Under the Spaniard Slave system, slave marriages were respected and wives were not at the mercy of the slave owner's sexual whims as they were under the Anglo system.
5. Under the Spaniard system, unrestricted punishments such as castrations amputations and extensive whippings were forbidden. The Anglo American system had no such restrictions and a slave could be beaten to death if the owner wished without any legal repercussions.
