Dispelling Certain Erroneous Anti Latino Rumors
Just recently I read that Latinos are extremely racist. In responded the following way.
Yes, racism is present in Latin America. However, your claim that Latinos try to keep the black presence in Latin America a secret, is totally wrong. You see, the history of Afro Latinos is taught in Latin American history books as part of their basic education. That being the case, how is their presence in Latin America being kept a secret?
Actually, such an idiotic attempt would be stupid since the presence of millions of Afro Latinos would be impossible to hide. They would be noticed in sports, such as soccer, with such persons as Pele, in boxing where the majority of Cuban, Dominican and Puerto Rican boxers are Afro Latinos. In the entertainment world, with famous singers such as the Afro Latina Cuban Celia Cruz. In the history of the nations themselves who have or have had prominent political black figures, such as the Venezuela president Chavez, and the Puerto Rican Freedom fighter Albizu Campos, as well as the black heroic figures in Mexican history, such as their first president, and last mayor of Mexican California.
The Term Moro or Morena is Racist?
Also, the claim that the term moreno, or morena is racist is wrong. Yes, it is used, but is never intended nor understood as a racial slur. Just a description of the person's race. Nothing more. You know, equal to calling somebody el Chino, for a Chinese, or el Arabe, the Arab, for an Arab.
Blacks are Under-Represented in Mexican Novelas?
First, there are only two and a half million Mexicans who identify as black in Mexico, and they tend to live in certain areas of the country. So portraying blacks as far more socially prominent than they really are, would be a misrepresentation, and Mexican viewers, for whom the novellas are primarily made, would find it extremely unusual and hard to believe.
Not representative of all Latin America
No, Mexican novellas do not represent all Latin American novellas. For example, Venezuelan novelas don't follow that European preferential social-depiction pattern. Neither do the novelas created in Puerto Rico for that matter.
You see, unlike the Anglos and Afros who occasionally drop by the Univision channel to snatch a peak, and then reach negative overgeneralizations, we Latinos are exposed to the Novelas of many Latin American cultures and not just ethnocentric Mexican ones.
The word Platanos racist?
About the word platano which you clam is racist, or plantain, is merely a very prominent part of the Dominican cuisine. yes, I did hear my mom saying that Dominicans eat a lot of Platanos. But it was in a culturally-focused joking way never used as a racist one. Neither did I ever hear any other Puerto Rican making any racist comment about any other Latino nationality. Political criticisms? Yes, of course they did. Such criticisms were usually against the Cuban communist regime. But they were never racial ones.
