The Ganges: A Sacred River or a Sewer?
Seasonal flooding of the Ganges river has flushed out dozens of bodies of that had been placed in shallow graves along its banks. Most are believed to be victims of the devastating Covid-19 surge that swept across India in April and May who were buried by families unable to afford the wood necessary for a traditional cremation.
It is extremely hard to understand how such a filthy river can be considered sacred, and how people can drink its water while dumping cadavers and untreated sewage into it.
In times past, this would be easier to accept since the existence of germs and their relation to illnesses, and the importance of not drinking contaminated water was less known. But that period of profound human ignorance is long passed, and one expects some common sense at this stage of human history.
