Tao of the insulting friendlies
Yes, there are humans who will feign friendship so they can be close enough to the target to deliver insults. Motivation? Well, they might be harboring some personal gripe based on some real or imagined offense. Or else they might simply enjoy inflicting abuse on others. But it really doesn't matter. The purpose is the same, to be near enough to deliver the insults on a regular basis, and the only way to do that is to gain the target's trust by feigning friendliness.
Now, once the intended target is convinced that they are indeed genuine friends, then the well-planned personal insults will begin. Please note that the person will use all types of guile in order deliver them. Things such as as a well- practiced friendly smile accompanied by a melodious effeminate or high-pitched female voice, and a saintly, benevolent stare. Anything that will render the target confused or temporarily convinced that nothing is really amiss.

How long this insult-barrage situation will last will totally depend on how long the target remains gullible. You see, once the person gains the target's trust, it isn't easy for the targeted person to reclassify the so-called good friend as an enemy hell-bent on his humiliation. Instead, insults will tend to be rationalized away as merely social clumsiness, or a lack of education, or even maybe as the person's misguided albeit sincere attempts to help. The victim might even begin berating himself as being overly-sensitive.
Strange as it might seem, such a quaint tableau can last years before that trust has run its course and the victim finally and seemingly suddenly realizes that he has been a target all along, and that he has stupidly cooperated in a continual effort at his own humiliation. Once that understanding takes place, then getting rid of such a parasitic pest becomes easy despite the verbal parasites efforts to remain within striking distance.
Eventually and hopefully, the pest will get the message that he or she no longer has an available target and will seek someone else.
