Theological Issues in relation to the word Soul in the Bible
Most persons who claim to be Christian believe that humans are dual in nature, both spirit and physical. They claim that man was provided with a spirit called the soul which survives his death and is immortal. This idea, unfortunately, generates many contradictions and biblical ideas that generate biblical contradictions should always be viewed with a very critical eye since their purpose might very well be to deceive.
Genesis 3:1-4 in the fourth verse that Satan, the Serpent, told Eve the very first lie: "Ye shall not surely die.
Here are issues that arise about the popular idea of the human immortal soul.
1. Animals are referred to as souls
Revelation 16:3 “and every living SOUL died in the sea.”
2. Souls are described as being destroyed or dying.
The Soul That Sins Shall Die
(Ezekiel 18)
(Ezekiel 18)
3. Adam is described as becoming a soul not being given a soul
Genesis 2:7 NIV
Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
1 Corinthians 15:45
So it is written: "The first man Adam became a living being;" the last Adam a life-giving spirit.
5. Psalms tells us that all thoughts cease at death. This contradicts the popular belief that thoughts persist in the soul after a person's body dies.
King James Bible
Psalms 146: 4
His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.
6. The soul is supposed to be immortal. But the immortality that Satan claimed was mankind's is never used in reference to a soul. The only time immortality is used is in reference to God, Christ and those humans who are chosen to heaven to rule the universe with him.
1 Timothy 1:17. "Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever, Amen."
Timothy 6:l6 is even more clear. "Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen."
“The soul [ nephesh ] who sins shall die” (Ezekiel 18:4, Ezekiel 18:20).
"Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die." Ezekiel 18:4.
1 cor 15:
…52 in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must be clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come to pass: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”…
So mankind's condition is perishable and mortal unless God grants those who are ressurected with immortality.
7. A soul is never described as being a spirit. It is translated as "me, life, person, creature,
8. The soul's home is understood as being heaven. Yet home for mankind is described as Earth, not heaven. Repeatedly we are told that the heavens are God's but that the Earth was given to mankind t dwell upon forever. The vast and intricate preparation of Earth with its many life-sustaining cycles making it ideal for human habitation provides ample evidence that this is the case.
Psalm 115:16 ►NIV
The highest heavens belong to the LORD, but the earth he has given to mankind.
Genesis 1:28-30
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth…
Genesis 9:1-3
And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth…
10. Souls are described as being hungry and eating. If indeed souls are spirits, then why are they being described as eating, and being hungry?
King James Bible
Luke 12: 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
The reason why such theological issues arise isn't because the Bible itself is not clear. It is because certain non-biblical ideas were adopted from the pagan world by those referred to as the early church fathers.
2 Timothy 4:3 ►NIV
For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
1 Timothy 4:1-3
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; …
