Men Calling Men Papi?
There seems to be a certain trend among certain Puerto Ricans to feel that it is cool for a man to call another man Papi. When I was growing up in Newark New Jersey, it was Pana. Which meant close friend. I saw absolutely nothing wrong with that. Then they started saying Brothel. Or brother. Nothing wrong there either. Some are now imitating certain African Americans in using the N word. I disagree with that practice.
As for the word papi? there I have a problem. You see, that was once totally reserved for Latino women as a term of endearment towards a male lover, boyfriend or husband. A way for them to warm up the situation for sex. So when I hear it being used from one man to another, it immediately conveys effeminacy. Or a man who is dropping hints that he is a homosexual in order to break the ice. Or else it can be used in reference to a man being suspected as being effeminate.
Now that last one can be dangerous since it might provoke the suspected man into becoming violent. Yes, most people have control of their reactions, but some don't and using it is a risk. Something akin to playing Russian Roulette.
Now, if ma addressing another man that way gets seriously injured as a consequence, he has only himself to blame. I just recently had someone identifying himself as maintenance knock on my door and immediately, one of his words was Papi.
I immediately told him not refer to me in that manner. I went inside, thought about it, went to the hallway again, and began questioning him concerning his knocking on my door for no good reason.
Sure, he is young, and bigger, but you see, I really don't give a rat's fat ass since if it bleeds, then you can kill it, and I'm sure that this Puerto Rican SOB bleeds. Suddenly he went from being obnoxiously aggressive and became a meek and apologetic chocha.
Good decision! Had he become rowdy, then things could have gotten interesting in a rather gruesome way. For example, a visit to ER for injuries sustained to his skull might have become urgently necessary.
In short, why not leave people alone? Wanna call each other poppie, mammy, or mommy, or whatever, do so among yourselves and don't involve person's whom you don't know. Want respect? Give respect. That goes a long way in preventing a situation that has the very likely potential of going out of control in a very nasty way.
