First, I do not approve of racism and i have never gone around purposefully persecuting people because of race. So the following is an effort to clarify a very popular misconception that all racists claim racial purity.
This issue arose a few days ago when I mentioned racism from Puerto Ricans towards me, as an island born Puerto Rican. I was immediately confronted with the objection from the visiting nurse that Puerto Ricans are mixed, so how is it possible for them to be racist? No I was not seeking to debate. I was merely unburdening myself from certain tension that this had caused in my life. But since she felt obligated to raise that objection, let me address it briefly.
Well, the first flaw in that objection is that not all Puerto Ricans are mixed. That idea is based on the belief that being Puerto Rican is a racial thing. It isn't. Puerto Rican is a nationality not a race just as being American is a nationality and not a race.
In short, we have Puerto Ricans of East Asian descent. Ones of European descent. Ones of total black African descent. Such Puerto Ricans, if racist, might indeed claim racial purity. But racist Puerto Ricans who are a mix of Taino , Spaniard and black or any combo of those three, which are the vast majority, are usually not making such a claim, although some who are predominantly of non Black descent might.
Also, she seemed to be saying that being mixed should prevent racist? Well, why doesn't being mixed prevent Afro Americans racism? Yes, African Americans can indeed be very racist. I say this from personal experience and from observation and statistical studies of racially motivated hate-crimes. In short, there is nothing in being mixed that inherently prevents adopting a racist attitude.
So there should be no surprises when mixed Puerto Ricans behave in the same way that African Americans behave toward others and towards one another. No, I do not approve of it, and have been victimized by it from members of my own family such as Puerto Rican aunts, Puerto Rican father, and Puerto Rican others.
In short, there is absolutely no evidence that mixed people can't be racist. A very sad thing to contemplate but it is what it is.
