Strange isn’t it?

Strange isn’t it? The way that we have calmly wallowed in Earth orbit all these decades after claiming having reached the moon during the early 1960‘s. How we intensely celebrate each space-walk and near-Earth accomplishment at a mere 66 miles from the ground. How we proudly classify such feats as traveling into outer space and expect them to be acknowledged as something extraordinarily fabulous.
Strange isn’t it?
How the moon has remained bereft of that sprawling installation that we so majestically envisioned in the TV series Space 1999. Or that other moon-base we so lavishly portrayed in the film 2001 a Space Odyssey. Back then, it had been taken for granted that we would have gone far beyond mere Earth orbit by now. Yet, here we are, celebrating the slightest jump as if we had never gone to the moon at all.
Strange-wasn't it?
How space-travel has suddenly become terrifying, and the risks unacceptable, when during the sixties, we had fearlessly considered the moon a mere first-step in our eventual exploration and colonization of our entire solar system.
Weird how our astronauts have remained crammed like sardines in space-capsules that resemble tomato cans more than they do space ships. How we clumsily continue splashing down in mid-ocean instead of landing our beautifully streamlined rocket ships on Earth and on other planets as we confidently envisioned in our Sci fi stories and films.
Strange how we are still claiming that we went to the moon-isn’t it? Even now in the year 5555, when we should have done better by now, but we still don't.
