The Hair and Scalp People

Maria, a young Latina woman of 24, had been living a rather normal existence. She had been attending college and getting good grades and was socially popular. That was until one day, she suddenly discovered that she had people literally living in her hair. It turns out, that strange as it might seem, these tiny, undetected folks had been in her hair since birth. Yes, not just imaginary ones, mind you, but real people albeit very microscopic ones. Stranger still, she discovered that everyone on Earth had them, but were completely unaware of it. In fact, entire lifetimes would elapse from birth to grave without humans ever even slightly suspecting that their scalp was profusely colonized by these miniature humanoids.
But how could humanity have known? After all, these folk didn’t produce any undesirable symptoms, such as intense itching of the scalp, as lice did. Maybe because they were much smaller and did everything possible to remain undetected in order to avoid the inevitable, hostile human reaction to their colonization.. So they cunningly had chosen to remain beyond human detection for millennia all the while enjoying the warmth of the human scalp, and cunningly siphoning the cerebral neurological activities in order to power their microscopic machines, while quietly setting up elaborately complex, albeit humanly undetectable habitats.
This, it turned out, had been part of the normal human condition for millennia, and Maria would have also remained totally unaware of the unauthorized colonization had it not been because they voluntarily decided to contact her via neurologically-induced imagery. Of course, initially, she thought it was her imagination. Vast colonies of miniature aliens living on her scalp? Using her hair follicles as compartmentalized dwelling places? For a long while, she had giggled hysterically to herself at the absurdity of the notion, and had casually brushed it aside as totally absurd.
So in order to convince her of the reality of their existence, the minute humanoids instructed her to place a hair follicle under the microscope and that they would then clearly reveal themselves. True as promised, there they were, thousands of blond, microscopic pale-skinned, large-eyed, humanoids gathered around the base of the single hair follicle, dressed in aqua-blue jump-suits, all enthusiastically waving, smiling broadly, and trying to catch her attention.
For a brief moment, Maria panicked, and flinched, violently away from the microscope, almost fainting from the shock catching the attention of the students around her who gave her reprimanding stares. After gazing again into the microscope, and seeing the humanoids holding up signs with her name inscribed on them, she attempted to get fellow student confirmation.
Yet, other students saw nothing except the hair follicle.
“So what’s new?” They would say, one after the other:
“That’s just a hair follicle!” and would give her the you-are-a-weirdo look.
But she was convinced that it was indeed real-which actually, it was. having accepted it as an unpalatable reality, the inevitable questions began to arise. How had this indignity happened to humanity and for how long had it been going on? When exactly had we as a species been so intimately invaded? Of course, one of her her first thoughts was to go and shower and scrub her scalp with shampoo in order to get rid of them. But wouldn’t that be murder? After all, these were not animals, these were sentient, kindred, reasoning beings and size did not make the kinship irrelevant. Yet, she pondered whether such an attempt was justified due to their violation of the human right to informed consent? In any case, she had regularly showered and used shampoo all her life and they had remained totally unaffected for some mysterious reason.
Perhaps they were utilizing some type of a force-field? Or maybe they were not totally denizens of our universe or even our dimension and that was rendering them impervious to all human efforts to eradicate them? Gradually these concerns began to become all-consuming and she seriously considered seeing a psychiatrist in order to have her sanity confirmed. But the humanoids warned her that they would once more conceal themselves and her sanity would be questioned.
When she asked why they had chosen to reveal themselves to her, and her alone out of all the other billions of people in the present and past, they said that it was because they liked her and had suddenly felt guilty keeping her in ignorance. They had expected appreciation for the revelation and not severe distress, which strangely seemed to be a consequence that they were incapable anticipating. So they assured her that they had really meant her absolutely no harm and that they would very soon return to remaining undetected. In that way, she could resume her former, carefree ways. They also expressed deep regret for having temporarily violated their cultural tradition of total secrecy and for having disturbed her former peace-of-mind as a consequence.
Well, true to their alien, humanoid, word, they did just that. Suddenly, all was blissful silence once more for Maria as the communications totally ceased, and life seemed to return to normal. Yet, it wasn't. You see, Maria had suddenly ceased to be the exuberant carefree, young woman that she had once been before the alien revelation. Her family and close acquaintances noticed her sudden and uncharacteristic deep silences and increasingly morose moods. They also noticed her isolation from, others and how she now always appeared to be in deep thought, as if she had been constantly distracted by her own disturbing, internal ruminations, The expressions of deep concern flitting briefly across her once-carefree countenance while seemingly gazing intently into a far distance, as if she had been observing things that others could never hope to see also caused them to worry.
These aberrant behaviors became gradually more frequent and intense, until one day, for seemingly no reason, they found that Maria had hurled herself from the 20th storied balcony landing on her head.
She had left a brief note on her bedroom table with the message reading:
“Never with my consent and cooperation!”
Strange how they detected a slight smile on her face. But this was because the last thing Maria had heard before hitting the ground was a multitude of panic-stricken alien voices crying out:
“Please! Noooo!”
