Genesis day need not be 24 hours long.
There are huge debates over the length of the creative days mentioned in Genesis. These debates make many persons view the Bible as anti scientific because the interpretation of 24:hour creative days appears to contradict the geological evidence which is generally accepted as fact. The sad part is that it really isn't necessary to insist on a literal translation of the word "day" in Genesis.
For example, God told Adam he would die on the day he ate of the forbidden fruit. Yet Adam is described as having lived to be almost a thousand years old.
King James Bible
Genesis 2:17
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Genesis 5:5 NIV
Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.
So the word "day" can be understood as referring to a much longer time span. This is brought to our attention later on in the Bible both in the OT and in the NT in the following way:
2 Peter 3:8 New International Version (NIV)
8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day
Psalm 90:4 ►
A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.
Also, when we speak to children we modify our vocabulary and concepts so that they can understand us. So it isn't unreasonable for us to conclude that God would also express things in a manner that they were understood to humans of those days.
Why did God Express Himself in such a simple way in Genesis?
