The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has just spoken concerning the possibility of resuming the Nord Stream gas-supply to Europe. Of course, this peaceful gesture is appreciated since it doesn't involve declarations of possible nuclear strikes and tends to alleviate the tension to a degree.
Nevertheless, as I observed Putin delivering this rather peaceful message, I could not get rid of my thoughts concerning all the dead civilians which his indiscriminate cannon and rocket shelling of residential areas in Ukraine have caused. As I watched him calmly enunciating these issues, calmly inhaling air, calmly seeing the light of day and hearing sounds because he is still well and alive, I could not avoid but seriously wondering how he manages to do so in such a calm manner despite the numerous human lives that have been snuffed out based on his merciless decisions. Decisions that placed their deaths squarely on his shoulders.
In short, instead of appreciatively perceiving a politician seeking peace, I perceived a murderer without conscience, a man stubbornly willing to inflict death on men women and children regardless of advanced age or infirmity. I perceived a man capable of doing what had once been considered unthinkable, of seriously placing our entire planet's ecological system in danger of total ruin, and of placing mankind itself in the danger of extinction simply because things are not going his way.
As for the audience, I perceived no joy in their countenances. For the most part, there seemed to be a certain look of fatality. A certain stoic mindless determination to face the horrifyingly inevitable. as for the applause, the applause seemed to have been dutifully given on cue, but nothing as effusive as Hitler used to get in is heyday nothing comparable to what Putin was getting himself during his rise to power when he had promised Russians a bright future.
