Mockery of the Aged
Leviticus 19:32 - Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I [am] the LORD.
1 Peter 5:5 - Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all [of you] be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
It all comes under the principle stated in the following scripture:
Math 24 'Love your neighbor as yourself’”
Which means that since we would not like to be mocked at that advanced stage of life, then we should not mock others.
We all want to live and don't like to think that we grow old and die. Unfortunately, mankind suffers from the effect of inherited imperfection as a consequence of the original fall from grace and as a consequence we wither and die. The scriptures are very clear about this human condition as described in the verses below.
1 Peter 1:24 ► NIV
"For, "All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers
"For, "All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers
James 4:13-14 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.
Considering that it is a condition that is common to all mankind, it is surprising that there are some young people who feel justified in mocking and disrespecting the aged because they are aged and who seem to think they are immune to the aging process. This situation poses a an ironically quaint scenario similar to the ones mentioned below.
Future death-row prisoners mocking those undergoing execution..
Future leapers mocking leapers.
Future quadriplegics mocking present quadriplegics.
Future cancer victims mocking present ones.
Future burn victims mocking present burn victims
Future persons to be crucified mocking those who are being crucified.
Future dead people mocking those who have died.
Future leapers mocking leapers.
Future quadriplegics mocking present quadriplegics.
Future cancer victims mocking present ones.
Future burn victims mocking present burn victims
Future persons to be crucified mocking those who are being crucified.
Future dead people mocking those who have died.
Notice that the only thing separating all the mockers from those they mock is that there time hasn't arrived YET.
But the perplexing question is Why? Why would a mortals, destined to age and die, feel that they have a right to mock those who have reached a stage in life that they too are destined to reach? After all, none of us escapes neither old age or death. So why the disdain and the gloating?
As it turns out, it is based on a sense of immunity, or the delusion of immortality. Sure, others are old, but they feel exempt.
Sure, people die, but not them. So they do not identify with the aging process until the aging process forces them to. It is a slow and gradual realization process that grows stronger until a full realization suddenly dawns on the mockers and they finally concede that they were wrong. Perhaps this strong tendency towards denial is because aging and death are unnatural, after all, mankind was not created to die but to live forever.
Whatever the case may be, we are told to have consideration respect for the elderly instead . So mockery is definitely not an acceptable Christian behavior.
In conclusion the mockery is illogical because the mockers themselves are included in the process. The mockery is also incompatible with Christianity since the Bible tells us to show respect for the aged and love others as we love ourselves.
Which means that since we would not like to be mocked at that advanced stage of life, then we should not mock others.
