How Island Puerto Ricans View Themselves Racially
There is a very widespread misconception concerning how Island Puerto Ricans view themselves racially. This misconception is derived from the many interviews of New Yoricans, persons of Puerto Rican descent who were born and raised in New York, on YouTube. These individuals invariably claim to represent all Puerto Ricans despite the vast cultural differences between them and island Puerto Ricans.
You see, whenever New Yoricans are interviewed, usually by narrow-minded and prejudiced African Americans or Anglo Americans, and asked about how Puerto Ricans identity themselves racially, they almost invariable identify themselves as black, or if not black then mixed.
Of course one would tend to assume their statements are accurate. The truth is that they are not. In fact, they are merely opinions based on how they themselves view themselves after decades of being exposed to propaganda based on Anglo American and African American prejudice and ignorance.
The truth is that island Puerto Ricans view themselves completely different from how these New Yoricans do. Evidence? As evidence we have the census results posted below which clearly reveal the way in which island Puerto Ricans identify themselves racially as opposed to the New Yorican black and mixed viewpoint.

Notice that contrary to the New Yorican view, island Puerto Ricans predominantly identify with their European heritage as opposed to the West African one that New Yoricans constantly claim that they do. Notice also, that a certain percentage of Puerto Ricans choose to identify with Native America. Others choose to identify on the census as East Asian. Others as non-Spaniard Europeans. Why? Very simple, it's because these are Puerto Ricans of East Asian and non Spanish European lineage and even natives from the Hawaiian Islands.
So this obsessive and very vociferous identification with sub-Saharan Africa expressed by New Yoricans, has absolutely nothing to do with how island Puerto Ricans have ever identified predominantly, and nothing to do with how they are identifying predominantly now.
