Anti Black Latino Nations?
There seems to be this very pervasive misconception being propagated on the internet via Youtube discussions, that Latinos vehemently deny the West African Cultural heritage. Now, as a Latino, this accusation baffles me. Why? Simple, because I have never encountered any Latino nation denying its African Cultural heritage. Instead I see Latin American societies constantly acknowledging the West African contributions on to Latin American history, music, cuisine, Linguistics, and demographics.
Furthermore, there are 27 million Latinos in Latin America itself who proudly identify as being black. Also, if these nations are officially hell-bent on denying a black heritage, then why are there statues erected to honor Afro Latinos who have excelled in sports, politics, music and the military? In Puerto Rico, for example, there is an entire stadium dedicated to the Late baseball phenomenon Roberto Clemente.
A statue of Obama, an African American, President who visited the island, will be included in along with those honoring all other presidents who have visited. Afro Puerto Rican composers such as Bobby Capo. and Poets such as Luiz Llorenz Torrez are openly honored. The late Albizu Campos, a national political hero with a strong Afro heritage, is greatly honored.
The same can be said of the other Latin American countries. Honor is given where honor is due regardless of race.
California's last governor before it was annexed by the USA was black. The Afro Mexican Yanga, a revolutionary who successfully opposed the Spaniards, and set up his own community has a statue in built in his honor.
Furthermore, such accusations lack documented support, such as some formal declaration of of African Heritage denial, from some Latino politician, prominent Latino religious leader who dedicated himself to such denial. Or some Latino author who went out of his or her way to discredit the African Side of Latino culture. Or some specifically anti African social movement in Latin America that was focused on this denial. Instead, such claims are offered as mere personal opinions.
Are there racists people in Latin America? Yes, as there are racists in the USA, both white and black, and all over the world including black African countries. However, to say that these countries are predominantly racist societies is another matter. To be honest, the one country that stands out as being totally obsessed with race is the United States and not any Latin American country.
