Puerto Rican Women Odyssey
This is my personal opinion after a lifetime spanning 76 years of being in close contact and observation. Also, it is not applicable to all. Of course there is diversity. But what I describe is prominent enough to convince one that this is indeed an integral part of Puerto Rican cultural female comportment. The traits I describe below seem to be present regardless of geographical location.
Are they assuming that a good morning greeting is a veiled solicitation for sex? I have ben puzzled by their fierce animosity for many years ad have come to the following conclusions.
Could that reaction be based on their intense, almost pathological hatred of old age? That any attention from older man might bestow upon them as a personal insult and become extremely upset. By older, I mean at least 15 years older.
Ironically, as older women, they prefer much younger men. I mean, even twenty-five or more years younger in some extreme cases. Also, some are in the habit of considering all men stupid and are constantly talking about it among themselves. They sometimes say it in front of you and expect you to calmly accept it as their cute female privilege. I have never encountered this habit among other women such as Anglo-Americans, Afro-Americans, or even other Latinas.
Also, when they split up with a man, they can't seem to do so calmly. They tend to go into this exceedingly nasty, insulting vendetta mode. As a teen I had that happen to me three times in a row with Puerto Rican girls and never with any other girlfriends except an Italian one who wanted to have me attacked.
Not having learned my lesson, I paid the price. My marriage to a Puerto Rican woman was a total hell of arguments from dawn till dusk for fourteen years. My Puerto Rican mother argued with my Puerto Rican father constantly day and night for twenty years before finally separation and divorce put an end to the incessant insanity. He should have bought blinders as race horses have, since any side-ward glance at any other woman meant a fierce week-long altercation in which he often had to fend off her physical attacks. YIKES!
Extreme Suspiciousness of Strangers
For some unknown reason, they seem to feel that a good morning from a stranger an offer of help, or a request for help, or merely a friendly attempt to converse while in a waiting line, is a serious offense. Based on that misperception, they will either completely snub you, or else begin to argue vehemently or attempt to get reinforcements from friends or family members so they can put you in what they believe is your place.
