Cliffhanger Endings
A cliffhanger ending is an ending that leaves the reader wondering what will happen next. It is a literary technique that is used in films, short stories, novels and novellas and plays. As is true with all literary techniques, it can be used properly ior misused. When used properly the reader will not feel as if the writer took the easy way out because he could find no other way to extricate himself from the complexities that his story generated.
It that sense, it is similar to the deus ex Machina, literally [God on a Machine, employed in Ancient Greece wherein an actor playing the role of God would by lower onto the scene by attached by ropes to a pulley in order to have him rescue the protagonist from a situation impossible for him to have escaped on his own.
Deus ex machina
(/ˌdeɪəs ɛks ˈmækɪnə, - ˈmɑːk-/ DAY-əs ex-MA(H)K-in-ə,[1] Latin: [ˈdɛ.ʊs ɛks ˈmaːkʰɪnaː]; plural: dei ex machina; English ‘god from the machine’) is a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem in a story is suddenly and abruptly resolved by an unexpected and unlikely occurrence.[2][3] Its function can be to resolve an otherwise irresolvable plot situation, to surprise the audience, to bring the tale to a happy ending, or act as a comedic device.
Origin of the expression
Deus ex machina is a Latin calque from Greek ἀπὸ μηχανῆς θεός (apò mēkhanês theós) 'god from the machine'.[4] The term was coined from the conventions of ancient Greek theater, where actors who were playing gods were brought onto stage using a machine. The machine could be either a crane (mechane) used to lower actors from above or a riser which brought them up through a trapdoor. Aeschylus introduced the idea, and it was used often to resolve the conflict and conclude the drama. The device is associated mostly with Greek tragedy, although it also appeared in comedies.

There is also the possibility a reader expects all stories to have a conclusive resolution. In that case, t such a reader will deem such stories using a cliffhanger to be flawed or incomplete. The reader will feel that he needed to know what happened nest and that what happened next should have been included by default But used skillfully the cliffhanger endings do have their place and many a fine and fascinating a story has been concluded in that way.

5 Tips on Writing a Cliffhanger Ending for Your Novel
A cliffhanger ending can take many forms. Common types include:
Leaving the story in a perilous situation. Who can forget the ending of The Italian Job, with the bus dangling over the cliff edge?
Creating ambiguity about what happens next, such as in Fight Club, where the narrator discovers he hasn’t escaped his situation after all.
A character revelation that contradicts something we thought we knew. Maybe someone we thought was a good guy was a baddie all along!
All these will create a situation where the reader wants to know more, but make sure to pick an ending that will work with the rest of your story.
