Ocean's Top Predator When we think about the ocean's top predator what automatically comes to our mind is the great white shark. After all, with all that size weight and serrated teeth, who could possibly challenge such a monster? Well, as strange as it might seem, the Great White Shark itself is hunted for food by another ocean species, not a fish, but a mammal, the Orca. As far as size, the Great White has no advantage over an orca which can weigh up to six thousand pounds. That's, half the weight of a full-grown African elephant. But even worse for the great white is that the Orca has the intelligence to figure out a technique that renders the Great White helpless. They flip it upside down and that induces a lethargic state. To add to this disadvantage, the Orcas hunt in packs. Imagine being rammed in the liver from below by a six thousand pound Orca at approx 40 miles per hour. It virtually paralyzes the great white in its tracks. They also flip the Great White on its back a render it lethargic and defenseless. Here is a video that describes it in detail.
