Taino Anti-Spaniard movement not an Afro Puerto Rican one
The recent demonstration in the USA targeted against Anglo American racism against African Americas has served to motivate a certain Taino activist group into advocating the same be done in Puerto Rico in reference to the island's strong Spaniard historical artifacts. That is to say, the demolition of statues dedicated to such persons as Christopher Columbus, and Juan Ponce De lean should be demolished. They claim that these are all just bitter reminders of all the oppression that Spain inflicted on native Americans and Afro Puerto Ricans during colonialism.
But please note that this movement was in effect much prior to the recent USA reaction to the murder of a Black man by police officers. This movement for Puerto Rico to reject Spaniard presence and historical heritage has been in force for many years and has been advocated that all Puerto Ricans identify as Tainos. That would mean that the African heritage of Puerto Rico is being rejected as well in favor of the Taino. So in that sense, it is replacing one racism with another.
