Response to Trump's Selling Puerto Rico Idea
After the hurricanes that devastaed the island, President Trump suggested that perhaps selling Puerto Rico would be best. This, of course brings up the island'value in terms of the taxation derived from it as well as its natural resources.
In 2016, Puerto Rico paid $3.5 billion into the US Treasury. Residents of Puerto Rico pay into Social Security, and are thus eligible for Social Security benefits upon retirement. However, they had been excluded from the Supplemental Security Income.
On April 10, 2020, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit ruled that residents of Puerto Rico were eligible for SSI, finding that the residents of Puerto Rico make substantial contributions to the federal treasury in higher amounts than taxpayers in at least six states and the territory of the Northern Mariana Islands.
The federal taxes paid by Puerto Rico residents include import/export taxes,[13] federal commodity taxes, and others. Residents also pay federal payroll taxes, such as Social Security and Medicare taxes.

At that rate of 3.5 billion per year, they would pay 35 billion in ten years and 70-billion in twenty.
Yes, Puertyo Rico pays federal taxes. Here’s how much
For example, what price do you place on the Vieques Bioluminescent Bay, the El Yunque Rainforest, the extensive unique Cave Systems, the beautiful Old San Juan architecture, and the historically significant El Moro?
But more importantly, what price is to be placed on the Puerto Rican loyalty which has been demonstrated by willingness to shed blood and die in all the wars, such as WWI, WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, The Gulf War that the USA has fought during the last 100 years worth?
But if indeed Puerto Rico is suddenly deemed such an unbearable burden, then a far more culturally and historically acceptable option is returning the island to Spain. Please note that Puerto Rico was about to be made a Spanish province with far more rights than it has now under USA colonialism. It was suddenly deprived of that freedom and privilege by an Armed USA invasion even though Spain fervently requested that the island remain under her care. You see, Puerto Rico was referred to sentimentally as La Siempre Fiel, or the Always Faithful because it had never seriously attempted to free itself from the Mother Country. So returning the island to its rightful owner would be the decent and honorable thing to do.
