Absurdity ofTelling Us what our Culture involves
Have you ever noticed how there are some people who seem to consider themselves experts on other people's cultures and even go around telling other people what their culture is really about? You haven't? Well, I have, both pertsonally and on the Internet. It happens in relation to the Latinos. Strangely, such individuals, usually Afro Americans, will proceed to argue with Latinos about what Latinos think and what Latino values are really all about.
Strange? Of course, it's strange. Imagine doing the same with the Chinese, Koreans, Viet Namese, or Indians from India. Hard to imagine-isn't it? Of course, it is. It's unimaginable because it's readily recognized as irrationally absurd. In fact, it never crosses their minds because they consider it both rude and stupid. After all, common sense should tell us that these Asiatics should know what their culture is all about and certainly don't need foreigners to tell them-especially foreigners from the USA which is approx 12 thousand miles distant.
However, with Latinos, it seems to be a totally different story. With these you find them doing this on a very regular and and annoying frequent basis. In fact, the frequency and intensity of this noxious activity seems like an obsession. They strive to dictate to Latinos what Latinos think, what they really feel, aspire to, what really motivates them, about their customs, about their plans, about their history and cultural values, and if informed by a Latino that they are woefully wrong in their personal opinions and ludicrous assumptions, then they take it as a personal insult, become extremely agitated and personal insults and accusations start to fly.
Such a demonstration can really turn weird. I had an African American young man standing in line behind me at a medical facility vehemently demanding that I pronounce my Spanish name in the way he did-totally wrong. He kept claiming that my pronunciation was defective. Looked as if he wanted to throw hands over it. Make any sense? That's like telling a Chinese guy that the way he is pronouncing his own name is wrong. SMH!
No, I am not saying that they are insincere in their erroneous beliefs. However, it just strikes as weird that they should be so obsessed with Latino matters that they feel they must constantly argue about them. After all, the Afro American community should have other far more important matters that deserve their attention such as their problems with Anglo American institutionalized racism.
Or does it? Well, if we are to judge by all the attention that Latinos garner from the African American community, it would seem as if Latinos are indeed one of their prime concerns. The question is, why should Latinos be such a constant African American prime concern and is constantly challenging their cultural values and striving to substitute their own ideas is a good way to approach the matter. Considering how annoying that strategy is it only serves to separate the two communities since obviously the mutual respect necessary to establish a genuine friendship leading to effective cooperation is being undermined by this constant harassment. Would they suffer the same approach from the Latinos towards their own culture? Of course not. Then why inflict it others?

"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets" (Matthew 7:12).
