Purpose of the Latino Diversity Category
The reason I decided to create this category is that a very prominent Latina politician just made a very misleading statement about Latinos. Now, whether she indeed believes her own statement or not [hard to believe that she does] is irrelevant. You see, a person in her position of social responsibility needs to be accurate and not seriously misrepresent any of her constituents. This person did just that by announcing that all Latinos are of one race-Black.
Now, if indeed that were true, then OK, nothing wrong with it. However, this is very far from being the truth since Latinos are not all of one race. Quite to the contrary, Latinos are a very diverse cultural or ethnic group which includes members of many races either mixed or unmixed. Some are black, approx 42 million actually. Others are East Asian, approx four million or one percent of the population. Others are Mestizo, which is the largest group in Latin America. Still, others are of total or else predominantly European descent.
In short, there is no way that all these people fall into just one racial category of black, white, or East Asian. In fact, blacks are a minority in Latin America and their cultural contribution varies from one country to another. So even cultural influence statements must be approached with caution lest we give an erroneous impression of reality.
So since this brazen effort is being made to misrepresent Latinos and spread ignorance perhaps for some politically- motivated reason, such as garnering Afro American votes, this section is dedicated to telling the truth about Latino people
