The Folly of Revealing Pet Peeves
As humans who are socially inclined, it's fun to share such knowledge and to discover that others have our same views. However, there can also be a downside to it. You see, since a pet peeve is something that annoys you it can be used against you.
That can happen whenever there is a heated argument or a strong difference of opinion. Then the other person will be tempted to use such personal knowledge as a weapon.
Does whistling while working annoy you? The co-worker will now whistle. Does chewing loudly while eating annoy you? The person will start chewing that way. Does mockery of the aged bother you. The person will begin mocking the aging process and include you whether you look aged or not. Does being given the cold-shoulder or being ignored bother you. The person will start shunning you.
Now, if such persons don't know exactly what can really bother you-that is one less weapon at their disposal. But if you have meticulously informed them concerning all the things that do bother you, either slightly or deeply, then they have an arsenal from which to draw.

So if you think that social position and family relationships are a guarantee against this foible-better think twice.
Parents can be especially skilled and very effective in using such information since they might know you better than you even know yourself and are able to press the right buttons. So if they decide to begin slowly turning the psychological screws in order to tighten the tension on the torture wrack-best watch out.
In short, it is better to try to keep such matters to yourself and lessen the chances of having what you said come back and bite you on the butt.
