Pontius Pilate asked Jesus the question: What is Truth?
John 18:37NIV
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.

Although Jesus did not respond to Pilate, either because Pilate immediately left after asking, or because his time of preaching had come to its conclusion, or simply because the question ha been a cynical rhetorical one, Jesus had already answered it in his pre-resurrection ministry via preaching the Gospel, or the Good News of the Kingdom. What was that truth? The truth was that Mankind was going to be saved from death via his own sacrifice which would pay for the sins of the world.
That the world would not continue forever dominated by men but would be governed by Gods kingdom as it was intended to be at the start. In fact, preaching about that kingdom was one of the reasons he had been sent.
Luke 4:43
John 18:36(NIV)
36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
But He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.”
Luke 9:2
And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing.
Daniel 2:44 NIV
"In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.
Matthew 24:14
This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.
John 18:36(NIV)

Christians would accept that truth and be sanctified or set apart from the world.
“I request you, not to take them out of the world, but to watch over them because of the wicked one. They are no part of the world, just as I am no part of the world.” (John 17:15, 16)
John
17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Satan would strive to prevent the light of truth about the kingdom from reaching the minds of mankind and try to blind them instead. He would try to keep them believing that human science is their is only hope. Keep them believing that they can do well without God's help just as Satan had told Eve back in Eden during the fall from Grace.
2 Corinthians 4:4
....whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.

So Jesus knew full-well how to respond to Pilate's question. But his main task at that moment was serving as a Ransom sacrifice for our sins.
1 Timothy 2:5-6
For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.
Behold, the Lamb of God
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
1 John 2:2 NIV
He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
John 19:28-30 (NKJV)
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

After his death, Jesus' disciples would continue to provide the answer to Pilate's question and Pilate would be required to either accept or reject it.
