Slavery and the Bible USA system vs Mosaic Law
During slavery, some USA slaveowners strove to justify their enslavement and treatment of blacks by claiming that the Bible approved of it. After all, the Bible does speak of slavery as acceptable under the Law of Moses, doesn't it? True, it does. But that's comparing apples and oranges. You see, under the Mosaic Law you could not do with the slave whatever you wished as was customarily done in the USA.
For example you:
1.could not arbitrarily amputate any limb as punishment,
2. could not mangle a limb,
3. could not castrate,
4. could not pluck out an eye,
5. could not knock out a tooth,
6. could not savagely whip,
7. could not wantonly rape
8. could not procreate and abandon your offspring under slavery based on race,
9. could not throw a slave to be savaged by dogs,
10. could not use them to fight each other for your entertainment.
11. could not callously separate families.
12. could not keep a slave indefinitely without the slave's agreement.
Some laws prohibited it and punishments against those under the Mosaic Law who violated those them. Under the Spanish and Portuguese systems, these Mosaic laws were generally heeded. Under the USA system, all those nasty diabolical things were done with the full approval of the law.
Big Difference.
