So murder always the unjustifiable taking of a human life
The other, to kill, can involve both, the justifiable and unjustifiable taking of a life.
For example, the execution of persons who were stoned to death under the Mosaic law was killing but was not murder. Under the law of Moses, there are many sins which required the killing of the sinner such as bestiality, homosexuality, striking of a parent, blasphemy, witchcraft, etcetera. These were not murders.
Leviticus 20:27 NIV
"'A man or woman who is a medium or spiritist among you must be put to death. You are to stone them; their blood will be on their own heads.'"
Leviticus 24:16 - And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, [and] all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name [of the LORD], shall be put to death.
Leviticus 20:13 - If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood [shall be] upon them.

However, the killing of Stephan via stoning was murder because it was unjustifiable. He had done nothing to deserve it. The Bible is very clear on this distinction.
Neither is it wrong to kill animals for food. In Genesis right after the Flood God gives mankind the permission .
Genesis 9:3 NIV

Animals were to be killed and offered as sacrifices under the Mosaic Law:
Exodus 29:10-14
“Then you shall bring the bull before the tent of meeting, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the bull. You shall slaughter the bull before the Lord at the doorway of the tent of meeting. You shall take some of the blood of the bull and put it on the horns of the altar with your finger; and you shall pour out all the blood at the base of the altar.
