How the TAO of Dictatorial Website Moderators Ruin Things
Just as any other position of responsibility in all areas of life, Website moderation responsibilities there are those who qualify for them and some who do not. Among these are persons who enjoy bullying others. Provided with the power to make life difficult for forum members in diverse ways, they will find it extremely difficult to resist the temptation to dominate in a dictatorial fashion. In short, that touch of sadistic pleasure they gain from bullying those who are at their mercy will inexorably lead then on.
If there is only one of these noxious pestiferous moderators on a website-it won't be that bad. But if the majority display those negative qualities, then the website that has a potential to be outstanding will inexorably sink into mediocrity and even below that status. Members will notice the subtle and not so subtle abuse of their rights, or other members' rights. Will notice the smug sadistic psychological nuances employed, an many might just decide that the benefits derived from membership are not worth the hassle.
In short, those assigned to make a website better, might wind up drastically reducing its potential. Ironically, such a website might even launch fundraising campaigns in the misguided assumption that most members do not notice the subtle gloating harassment or smugness being meted out.
But as the Bible says, we reap what we sow, and eventually, the website starts to feel the effect of its bullying and if indeed there is someone reasonably sane at the helm, hopefully that individual will set things right. After five years absent.
BTW
I recently returned to a website that had those kinds of individuals in charge when I had left. Found them all still there going through the same noxious antics. Barking and snarling instead of calmly conversing. Giving orders when they should courteously request. Constantly hovering over the members and desperately watching what any member might chance to say like censuring hawks. Issuing constant warnings over trivial matters and rabidly swooping in with a host of punishments if their ridiculous standards are not met. No improvement whatsoever. SMH
