An Indian Grocery Store Tao not to Practice in USA
After frequenting a various stores owned by Asiatic Indians in Pennsylvania, I noticed that they will choose whom they will serve first or last according to how important they feel their customer is, or how fast they dispatch him. In one store, customers buying lottery tickets arriving AFTER a person who was a buying groceries were always attended first. In fact, the customer buying groceries was forced to wait while the clerks took care of all the people buying lotto tickets and only then was he attended to once more. All this time the customer buying food had to wait patiently at the counter with all the food placed there until all other customers were served.
I personally walked out of that store three times only to have the Indian store-owner tell me that he attends to people in whatever manner he wishes and I had nothing to say about it. After that display of utter arrogance and lack of concern, I took my business elsewhere for many months. When I did finally return, the owner seemed to understand that I didn't feel comfortable with his favoritism policy and stopped in relation to me. His employee, however, continued until I told him I was not willing to put up with it.
Now, I do understand that there are cultural differences and that what is acceptable in one country will not e acceptable in another. So very likely the Indian Store owners doing this might feel that they are not giving offense. However, please note that un the USA the first come first served rule is the one that is followed. People who arrive first do not approve of having others who arrived later to be served first. If it is done-it can be understood as telling the customer who arrived first that he is of lesser importance than those who arrived later. Now, the question arises as to why. Why do they feel they must serve certain customers first?
Every human behavior has a reason. One reason in a store that sells gasoline is that those stopping by to purchase gasoline are assumed to being in a great hurry to continue their trip. The reason might sound justified until you examine it carefully. You see, just because a customer is traveling on foot doesn't mean that his time is of less importance or that he is not also in a hurry. So the excuse is not satisfactory.
Another reason provided was that those persons arriving later always began to grumble if they were not served immediately. In other words they would rather see me grumble than have them grumble. Why?
Yet another reason, and the most offensive is that these Indians might feel that Latinos are second-rate citizens who deserve to be served last. Very unlikely Really? Then you must consider that India is a ln which is notorious for its institutionalized CASTE SYSTEM in which people are treated differently according to caste.
