Three ways in which people become racists
1.Parental Indoctrination
2. Negative Experiences
3. Socialization.

Parental Indoctrination
They are, of course, all not mutually exclusive. Let's consider parental indoctrination’‘s role in teaching of children to view others a certain negative ways. This effort can either go against or be in harmony with the society at large. For example, under Jim Crow, parents taught their kids what their society was upholding and teaching. However, in other cases, the parental indoctrination might be at odds with the society in which it is taking place. Other parents who oppose such racism and do not teach their kids that way.
Negative experiences
Negative experiences can be the primary reason why some individuals develop racist opinions. In this case, it is a matter of seeing or experiencing a sequence of painful or humiliating events, and making an inductive leap.
It can be compared to how astronauts might land on another planet, be pelted by rocks-and notice that the ones who pelt them most are the blue-skinned aliens. Eventually, an aversion will develop and a negative opinion based on experiences will develop towards all aliens who have blue skin regardless of whether they are guilty or not..
Socialization
Socialization the transmission of cultural values from one generation to another. If the values are racist, as was the case in the South of USA right after the USA Civil War, then those who are raised within it will usually turn out to be racist. Jim crow, the separation of the races was such that it was a constant reminder. Citizens of both races were expected to abide, violence, or else face fines imprisonment or social stigma. It is very similar to what happened in NAZI Germany in reference to the Jews.
The Bitter Irony
The ironical thing about this, is that the victims often eventually identify with the oppressor and start to imitate. So instead of learning compassion, cruelty is what is often learned, cruelties which will be perpetrated on others considered fair game. This is not a matter of opinion. This is a phenomenon that has been observed to occur in NAZI concentration camps where prisoners eventually joined the SS racists in persecuting other Jewish prisoners. Such a attitude is illustrated very effectively in the film DJANGO Unchained, where a black plantation slave,in the USA South, identifies with the cruel, sadistic master, and helps him keep all other slaves in what he considers to be their place.
Naturally, this isn’t easy to understand. How indeed can a victim reach such a sate of mind? After all, one would expect that humans who suffer due to cruelty would learn the wrongness of such behavior and become compassionate towards others as a consequence instead. But unfortunately, although that might happen some times, it seems that usually just the opposite is true.
Under the intense and constant harassment, cruelty is eventually deemed a virtue, while compassion, which might have been a former virtue, is demoted to a weakness of character to be avoided as a plague. Then those who can be easily victimized are eventually deemed to deserve it for being weak. Racist reasons that were employed to justify cruelty, are then adopted by the ones who were once the victims and become the rationalization for making them the pride of their modus operandi.
Interestingly, this is similar to what happens people who have suffered abused abuse as kids. Instead of learning that parents should not behave that inhumane fashion, they seem to follow the bad example instead. A seemingly interminable trans-generational chain-reaction is established in which one generation imitates the other, all unfortunate victims of the original child abuser, and all believing that they are doing the morally right thing.
Very sad situation indeed!
