Being Fearlessly Rude is being lovable?
Seems like an idiotic question, doesn't it? I mean, the usual reaction to being a victim of rudeness, or even seeing it, is anger and a low regard for the rude person's personality. Lovable? Not by a long shot. We tend to conclude that such a person was not brought up properly perhaps due to bad parenting or else due to inheriting very strong antisocial tendencies which canceled the good parenting out.
Unfortunately, we have a president who appears to display such a trait. You see, Trump has systematically garnered the reputation of being brutally honest about things he dislikes and people he dislikes. But is that an admirable trait? Is it a trait that we want our kids to imitate? Do we want our kids blurting out whatever comes to their minds about people? Of course not. Why? Because we know that such behavior garners enemies, is considered socially inappropriate, and will get them into deep trouble. This should be obvious-right?
Yet just recently, I read a statement about how Trump is to be admired and loved for fearlessly expressing himself about Haiti and other African countries in a very rude way. Seems as if the fellow making that statement believes that being fearless is ALWAYS a virtue. But is it? If a person sees danger and mindlessly plows ahead into disaster, is that fearlessness a virtue? Aristotle told us that such fearlessness is not the virtue of bravery but the vice of foolhardiness instead.
Also, assuming that we can imitate Trump, without suffering serious consequences, is just plain stupid. After all, racist statements can cause a person to be fired from his job. Is it worth winding up jobless? It can also lead to violence when the insulted person loses control while under provocation. Of course Trump is hermetically sheathed in security, so he can calmly blabber to his heart's content. However, we, the common citizens, do not enjoy that kind of safety.
So common sense dictates that we must watch what we say to others for fear that our luck might run out and we wind up jobless, at the the hospital or the morgue with a white tag on our big toe.. That is a very high price to pay for carelessly hurling insults around without a care in the world simply because the POTUS does it and gets away with it.
