Strange isn’t it?
Strange isn’t it?
Strange isn’t it? You know, how all these nations permit USA bases and troops in their sovereign countries as if it were perfectly OK. I mean, even the slightest suggestion that the USA permit foreign bases and troops to be stationed here would be considered an insult to the American sense of dignity, especially if the occupying troops and bases were from a country which has historically bullied and humiliated you.
A very baffling example is Japan. I mean, it wasn't simply beaten, it was forced to accept UNCONDITIONAL surrender after having its major cities carpet bombed with incendiaries, and finally nuked them twice with a horrendous loss of civilian life. That would be similar to having the Japs carpet bomb Washington DC and then nuke Los Angeles or NY and we allowing them to have military bases here in the USA. Of course, to us that would be unimaginably humiliating and we would never agree to it. Yet, the USA has approx 100 bases in Japan with the full consent of both the government and the Japanese people.
Then we have Spain, with the Spanish American War and its aftermath. The only colonies which Spain had remaining after its defeat, during a war it had not provoked but was initiated by a rumor, and the racist Manifest Destiny, were the Philippines, Cuba and Puerto Rico.
After the war it had none since it was forced to abandon them or else face further military aggression. Spain begged that they not take Puerto Rico, based on sentimental reasons concerning its constant loyalty to the motherland. Yet absolutely no mercy was shown.
Surprisingly, here too the attitude is one which seems very weird to Americans. After all this abusive humiliation we have two bases in Spain with the full approval of the Spanish government and a very mild reaction from a minority of Spanish citizens. So obviously, these people don’t have the same sense of nationality that we as Americans have since to us that would be absolutely unthinkable..
Then we have the Philippines. After we invaded and promise liberation from Spain, we refused to leave. A war started and approx 200,000 Philippines lost their lives striving to make us go home. Yet, despite the horrendous loss of life, we are still permitted to have a military presence in their country. Now, imagine if France had refused to leave the USA after it helped us to gain liberty from the British Empire. Also, imagine that 200,000 American lives were taken in order to force us to accept the French military presence in the USA. Would we then happily agree to allow French military bases in America? Of course not. To us that is unthinkable. Yet it doesn’t seem to bother the Philippines one bit.
