The TAO of the professional Prison Inmate
By professional, I mean a prison inmate who enjoys being in prison and wants to remain in prison ad if released. will do anything necessary to return to prison. I am not referring to people who are there-want to get out and stay the hell out and will do everything possible to remain out of prison. Now, the normal thing is for a human being to desire to be free. But, as is the case with any other human activity, there are always exceptions which are considered abnormal. The same applies to prisoners. Motives? Well, there are definitely motives which can be understood for this attitude. Let e enumerate them,.
1. Free food and lodging: Once released, some ex-cons either have to go on the dole or else work at flipping burgers in order to buy food. No honor in that scenario. The once inflated ego of a big boss man suffers humiliation. Begins to yearn for the days of glory when he was in charge.
2. Free recreation facilities: In the real world you gotta pay for such privileges and money will not come easily to an ex con who tries to earn it honestly once he is released. It has to come out of a possible meager wage designed to keep him at subsistence level. That is to say, barely enough for rent and food and nothing else.
3. Free education opportunities: In prison there is no stigma on having the government provide the prisoner with an education. It is considered part of his rehabilitation. Outside of prison, he has to feel like a social leach.
4. Environment where sadistic tendencies can be satisfied: In prison, some prisoners are allowed to satisfy their sadistic tendencies by victimizing the weak. Once released, that outlet is gone. So they suffer deprivation symptoms. Become depressed. Similar to a drug addict trying to go cold Turkey. So many might just choose to get back into the prison system where victims are readily available.
5. Camaraderie and respect: Some prisoners feel very important in prison. They feel powerful and respected by their peers. Some might even enjoy a powerful leadership status. Release such a prisoner into society, and he feels humiliated and disoriented with all the restrictions he encounters. In contrast to prison where he was admired, now he held in contempt. Jobs are denied him. Housing landlords avoid him. Society in general condemns him.
So what does the ex con do to solve these problems? Simple, he looks for a way to get back into the prison system. How? Easy! By committing some crime that will get him a long prison sentence. So he cunningly picks a target that will not pose any major threat to his physical well-being. The aged, the infirm, the child, the female, are all fair game. Or he might choose to make a big deal out of getting a traffic ticked and resist arrest.
In short, when you see some bozo publicly swaggering and looking for trouble, as if he doesn't really care about the dangers involved or the consequences-you might be actually seeing the professional Prison Inmate going through his routine-nothing more.
